KILIMO HALISI

Kilimohalisi is an agriculture and animal keeping project located in Bomang’ombe, Hai District, Kilimanjaro Region, northern part of Tanzania- East Africa. Our area borders famous places like Mount Kilimanjaro, Chemka hot spring and Serval wildlife.

WHY JOIN THIS FARMING PROJECT
We have achieved to provide permanent and non-permanent jobs for youth. We have been able to employ about 50 youth and among those youth, 18 are permanent and 32 temporary are those we call when there is a lot of work. The youth often gather with us during breakfast and lunch.

Kilimohalisi is a type of agriculture that uses natural fertilizers on a large scale in the production of plants and vegetables. The fertilizers that are used are often produced here on the farm. It is a project that can be done in a small area of your home to harvest your own vegetables without toxic fertilizers. Kilimohalisi is run on an area of approximately 49,000 square meters. The fertilizers used here come from insects, food waste and decaying plants from the farm.

Our volunteers get the time to learn all this while they are with us for a minimum of one week. It is a unique learning area and the contribution of volunteers is highly appreciated while in this area. Volunteering here does not require you to have expertise in agriculture or animal husbandry, but there are many areas including information preparation, computer specialists, content creators, construction technicians, environmentalists, people who want to change the environment and sports professionals. We also have a sports area owned by Kilimohalisi where after work and on weekends everyone works here and joins neighbors in various sports.

WHAT YOU WILL HELP!
This is the project which volunteers will be supporting during your stay. It does not need highly skills but your courage and ready to help.

Seed planting: – We plant various seeds including fruits, medicinal plants, fruit vegetables, this is due to the climate change we are facing. Volunteers will have the opportunity to help with the hard work and provide the expertise they have.

Installation of affordable drip irrigation

We are developing and distributing equipment that is affordable for farmers and is environmentally friendly in almost all regions of Tanzania. This is an area where volunteers will collaborate with our team to help with the number of installations. You do not need to have great expertise. We have been able to reach approximately 37,000 people in urban and rural areas.

We provide training and advice to farmers.

Our main target is to reach young people who are the largest group of people with low incomes and have the ability to produce more than older people. There are farmers who get the opportunity to visit us and learn more practically while here on the farm.We also have farmers from various countries who visit us to learn various skills and exchange ideas on agriculture and animal husbandry, including from countries like the UK, Brazil, Canada, Belgium and Asia. Volunteers will help prepare lessons and various teaching methods. Also for those with a teaching profession, this is the only place they can help. Computer experts are also needed in this area.

Production of organic compost:-

Kilimohalisi, we are also involved in raising Chickens, Ducks and Rabbits. Rabbits also produce urine which is harvested and stored for fertilizer on plants and pesticides on crops and vegetables. Insect farming is one of the activities carried out in our area. These insects are the famous black solder fly (BSF) which provides fertilizer for vegetables here in our farm. There are many activities that do not require high expertise that volunteers will help with by collaborating with our team. BSF is the one of the most protein to animals like chicken and fish. Its also used to keep environment clean and safe by decomposing food waste materials.

Cultivation of Veggies:-

Not only for producing seedlings and various plants but we also grow vegetables to gain experience and know the challenges that farmers face after giving them to us. According to that there are volunteers who have experience in agriculture and love beautiful landscapes.

Fish farming.

We also raise fish in our ponds whose water is obtained from rain. That water is also used in our agriculture. All this we teach people how to harvest and use that water for other activities. There are volunteers who come from countries that raise fish or are on the seashore and have great experience with how the farming is done.

Growing and keeping animals feeders .

Due to climate change that affects farmers and livestock in production activities. We raise insects called Black Soldier Flies (BSF) as a source of protein which is food for livestock such as Chicken and Duck. We produce plants that are grown on water that has been frozen called Azola, which is food for our Fish. We also grow grass for livestock such as cows, Rabbits and goats. We believe that learning is the key to understanding things we do not understand. We welcome various volunteers including those with expertise in producing animal feed using natural materials.

We treat soil for agriculture.

We have succeeded in becoming an area where we treat our small land for its suitability for proper agricultural use. Where we also provide training to various people on this low-cost technology for rural and urban farmers.

Sports is one our work

We have successfully purchased our own area which is used as a recreation area after a hard days work for our employees and guests. We also have sports equipment such as balls and sportswear for men. We are looking for volunteers who are able to teach our youth and the community around us to develop their talents. Also, if there are people who are able to donate sports equipment, it is good and we also welcome them to help us. Sports are very important for mental health and to develop the talents of the children who are our neighbors.
