LEMOSHO ROUTE FOR 8 DAYS.
8 days on the mountain itself give adventurers who choose the Lemosho Route good time in which to acclimatise and is a classic trail that has gained much popularity in recent years. Those who climb Mt Kilimanjaro via Lemosho will also have a more remote experience, as there is less traffic than is found on either of the popular Marangu or Machame routes, though eventually we do join up with the latter before we take on our summit attempt. One of Lemosho’s highlights is the Cathedral Peak – one of the highest points of the Shira Volcano. WHY CHOOSE 8 DAYS ?, Two reasons :The first reason and the most important reason to pick 8 days on the Lemosho Route is acclimatization. The 8-day Lemosho Route provides an increasing your chances of reaching the summit successfully.
Day by Day Plan
Day 1 Moshi- Londorossi Gate & Starting Point – Mti Mkubwa.
Distance: 6km
Trekking hours: 3-4 hours
After arrive at the Londorossi Gate for registration around 11am and in time to have our lunch. After Londorossi gate, we have a short drive to the start-point of today’s walk. Today our walking time will be around 6km.Lemosho Route is from the west and some people say this provides the very best views of Mt Kilimanjaro. The walk, steadily upwards, is a wonderful experience, with fantastic forest and some really colourful flowers.
Day 2- Mti Mkubwa Camp – Shira 1 Camp.
Distance: 8km
Trekking hours: 5-6 hours
Early in the morning we will have a breakfast. Our departure time will begin after breakfast to Shira 1 camp. Although our walking distance is only slightly longer than the first day. We eventually leave the forest environment behind as we move onto the moorland. From here, we are able to get our first view of both the Shira Plateau and mighty Kibo itself. We will be walking slowly to minimise chance of fatigue. During a day we will have a lunch before walking to Shira 1 Camp where we will make our tents in evening and have a prepared dinner.
Day 3 – Shira 1 Camp 3505m – Shira 2 Camp3804m
Distance:11km
Trekking hours:5-6hours
We set off first in a south-eastern direction across the moor and heathland of the Shira Plateau. Buffalo, dik-dik and klipspringer graze here and can occasionally be seen. Besides the captivating hiking experience, reaching the summit of Cathedral Peak on a clear day offers breathtaking views down into the valley. From our working experience on Mt Kilimanjaro, the valley below resembling a lost world is among our favourite view.
Shira 2 Camp is the best place on the trip to see Mount Meru which located in Arusha (the fifth summit of Africa and second-highest in Tanzania), depending the weather.
Day 4 – Shira 2 Camp 3804m – Barranco Camp 3950m
Distance:10km
Trekking hours:6-8 hours
There you will see the famous Barranco Wall, impressive in both its massive size and steepness. We have to climb to the foot of the Lava Tower before we then descend once more, down to Barranco Camp for our overnight stop. Then you will descend to Barranco Camp. . You can expect a total of around 6-8 hours of walking, during which time you leave the Shira Ridge,
Day 5- Barranco Camp 3950 m– Karanga Camp 4033 m
Distance: 5km
Trekking hours:4-5 hours
At the beginning of the day, we encounter the hardest part of the stage as we have to scramble up the near-vertical face of the Barranco Wall (also commonly referred to as the ‘Breakfast Wall’ as you tackle it right after your breakfast!). At the top of this climb, you will be rewarded with views of the Heim Glacier. After this, the rest of today’s walk becomes a bit easier as we first gradually descend to the gully below, and into the cold but beautiful Karanga Valley. Then you will start a more difficult hike to Karanga Camp, which features numerous ascents and descents on the route, but don’t worry about the experience.
Day 6 – Karanga Camp 4033m– Barafu Camp 4556m
Distance: 5km
Trekking hours: 4-5hours
After leaving Karanga, today’s stage climbs steadily, passing through barren, rocky landscape, with the Decken and Kersten glaciers visible away to your left. At the top of the climb, the landscape remains bleak as you descend into a valley and you get your first sight of another glacier, Rebmann.
Day 7- Barafu Camp 4556m– Summit 5895m– Mweka Camp3100m
Distance:17km
Trekking hours: 11-14hours
The only one certainty on Mt Kilimanjaro is to summit. Our schedule for our ‘Summit Day’ is of course will be very different to what has gone before in terms of wakeup in the midnight.
