TRAVELLING FACTS

WHAT TO WEAR ON SAFARI?

  1. Make sure you wear greens, browns, and khakis so as to not attract unnecessary attention. In Safariparksoutreach, khaki is the recommended coloursafari clothes
  2. Light-weight, breathable fabrics minimise noise when walking. Layers are a great way to pack light but stay warm. Temperatures can be cool on morning game drives, hot in the afternoon and cold at night. Layers allow you to remove clothing to make yourself comfortable as temperatures fluctuate
  3. Airy, long-sleeved shirts with a collar will keep the sun off your arms and neck
  4. Combat trousers are perfect with plenty of pockets to store your camera, sunscreen, and binoculars
  5. A light jacket or fleece is great for an extra layer of warmth in case you need it. Fleece is great because it dries quickly too
  6. Comfortable trainers are suitable for most safaris, even walking safaris. You can expect to be climbing in and out of the safari vehicle frequently and some light walking around the bush
  7. Hats are a fantastic way to protect your head and face from the sun in an open-top safari vehicle and they have the added benefit of reducing glare for better game viewing
  8. Sunglasses should be worn to block out harmful rays and polarised glasses will cut through the glare to make sure you don’t miss a thing
  9. Don’t forget to bring a swimsuit if your lodge has a pool
  10. For your evening meal, light colours are recommended so as to not attract mosquitoes. Linen trousers are the perfect way to look smart, stay cool, and prevent mosquito bites

WHAT NOT TO WEAR ON SAFARI?

  1. Don’t bring bright-coloured clothing or busy patterns. This will draw attention to you and scare off the wildlife
  2. Avoid camouflage clothing as some African countries reserve this pattern for military personnel only
  3. Dark colours attract Tsetse flies, so stay away from dark blue or black clothing – they have a painful bite!
  4. White coloured clothing will quickly show dirt and dust, so try to go neutral instead
  5. Formal wear is not necessary as most lodges and camps have a relaxed dress code. Bring a smart, clean outfit to wear to dinner, but there is no need to go too formal
  6. Heavy hiking boots take up too much room in your suitcase and aren’t necessary for most safaris unless you have been told that your itinerary includes walking through the rainforest or harsh terrain

WHY CAMPING SAFARI?

  1. AS AN AFFORDABLE TRAVEL ALTERNATIVE

Travel can often be expensive. Paying for flights and quality hotels, for example. If you want a cheap break, camping provides the perfect affordable alternative in the UK. You can simply drive to your location, and all you need is camping equipment and a campsite! Also, whilst the camping equipment has a one-off expense, you can use it many times so the investment is worth it.

  1. FRESH AIR HAS MANY BENEFITS

You may not realize how scarce fresh air is in your day to day life. When you go camping, you get the wondrous scents of the outdoors, as well as the smell of dinner cooking over an open fire.

  1. CAMPING IMPROVES RELATIONSHIPS

One of the best and most important aspects of camping is how it helps you build and strengthen relationships. When you go camping with friends or family, you get a chance to talk and visit without distraction, even late into the night.

  1. CAMPING ALLOWS YOU TO UNPLUG

Camping is a great chance for everyone to unplug and get away from their screens. In the great outdoors, you don’t find computers, tablets or televisions and there’s so much else to do that does not require electronics.

  1. HAVE THE CHANCE TO CONNECT WITH NATURE

When you’re camping, you get a chance to get in touch with nature, encounter wildlife and see the stars away from the bright lights of the big city. There’s nothing quite like it. Make sure you and your family have the chance to connect with nature when you explore the many benefits of camping.

  1. DEVELOP NEW SKILLS WHILE CAMPING

You can’t help but develop new skills while camping. Everyone on the trip will contribute and it’s a great chance to learn new things. You may learn how to set up tents, tie knots, start fires, cook a new meal and more. These skills are important to have, and yet we don’t often get a chance to develop them during the course of our regular busy schedules. While the benefits of camping for adults also apply to young people, there are a number of benefits specific to younger campers.

  1. CAMPING GROWS CONFIDENCE

It’s important for children to gradually become more independent and confident in their own capabilities. One of the benefits of camping for youth is that it allows them to learn independence in a safe and controlled environment. Children become more confident as they learn new things and have first-time experience

  1. CAMPING PROMOTES PHYSICAL FITNESS

Time spent camping is physical time. You set up a tent, gather firewood, go for a hike. At home, we often lead sedentary lives that do not promote physical fitness. When you’re camping, you can’t help but engage in physical activity and get your heart rate up.

  1. LEAVE TECHNOLOGY BEHIND

Whilst technology is generally amazing, it can be distracting too and we can become reliant on it. When camping, you have the opportunity to leave technology behind. Turn your smartphone off, leave your tablet and laptop at home and simply enjoy a more basic pace of life – it can be truly refreshing.

  1. SPEND MORE TIME WITH FAMILY OR FRIENDS

Finding time to be with your friends and family can be tricky. But it is important and we all need that social connection. Camping gives you the perfect opportunity to do so. Organizing a camping trip with your family, or a few close friends ensures you can spend quality time together.

  1. EXPLORE NEW AREAS

Helps you to be in new camping area where you have not visited. With plenty of hidden gems, camping safari gives you the chance to explore new parts of the country and travel to places you may not have considered before.

  1. CAMPING MAKES YOU HAPPIER

That’s right – camping goes a long way to improving your mood. It’s all to do with serotonin, that wonderful chemical our body produces that helps to make us happy. We’ve already touched on some factors that help the body create serotonin: more sunlight, more oxygen, and increased physical activity. And when you’re camping, you’re likely to tick all these boxes. Happy days

  1. CAMPING HELPS WITH PROBLEM SOLVING

Sometimes camping and its associated activities present you . Camping safari often introduces you to new experiences, possibly an activity you’ve been meaning to try but have never got around to.

Whatever the case, there is plenty of research that suggests tackling new challenges and experiences can keep our brains healthy, as they force us to think for ourselves. Better yet, they can enhance self-confidence, growth, and happiness, too.

  1. CAMPING INCREASES VITAMIN D INTAKE

There are no guarantees with this one – some people are convinced that simply muttering the words, “Let’s go camping” triggers a downpour. But camping often means more time in the sun.

And more of those rays means extra vitamin D, which has benefits for you. While much research exists to say that some benefits remain inconclusive, there appears to be agreement that it does aid bone health. Sun exposure has also been linked to mental health benefits, such as improved moods. However, this all comes with a caveat: Direct sun exposure should be taken in moderation and adequate protection should be used to minimise the risk of skin cancer.

  1. CAMPING CAN LEAD TO EXERCISE

When camping, you are often much more active than you usually would be. Typically you’re outside and on the go for most of the day, giving you a real chance to exercise and explore an active way of living. For example, you have more opportunities to go walking or hiking or try new activities like cycling.

If your daily routine entails long periods being seated, chances are your opportunities to exercise are limited. The solution? Go camping. These include combatting health problems and disease and improving your mood and energy levels. Simply hit the road and escape the daily grind or your regular routine.

FLYING TO KILIMANJARO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT(JRO)

To reach Mount Kilimanjaro you need to first land at Kilimanjaro Airport (Kilimanjaro airport code JRO) in Tanzania. Located southwest of the park, Kilimanjaro Airport is equidistant between Arusha and Moshi. Moshi is roughly 45 minutes’ drive away from the airport and most trekkers will spend the night here or near before continuing on to Mount Kilimanjaro to start their trekking.

It is possible to fly into Arusha Airport (airport code ARK), however, it’s a small domestic airport that only receives internal flights including from Zanzibar island. From the Europe, Asia, Canada or US you would need to stop at least twice, but more likely three times before touching down in Arusha. Moshi Airport is even smaller than Arusha and is also a domestic airport but not most useful.

The best way to get to Kilimanjaro is to arrive into Kilimanjaro Airport, which is considerably larger than both neighbouring airports and receives direct international flights. Currently, there are no direct flights to Kilimanjaro from UK or US. it is easy to transit through hub cities in Europe and the nearby countries of Kenya, Ethiopia and Qatar.

The best and most reliable option is to fly direct to Kilimanjaro International Airport(JRO) from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS) using KLM Airlines or Qatar Airways.

KLM are very professional and reliable when it comes to any baggage or delay issues (plus Amsterdam is a super cool city!). It is worth nothing that the return flight with KLM to Amsterdam is an evening flight and includes a short stop in Dar es Salaam.

Ethiopian Airlines and Kenya Airways offer indirect flights to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO)too.

Major airport across Europe and United States, both airlines fly direct to Nairobi in Kenya or Addis Ababa in Ethiopia (airport code ADD), and then connect to Kilimanjaro International Airport(JRO), usually with another stop in between.

The downside here is the connecting times and the reliability of these airlines, which frequently report delays and lost/stolen baggage, can be a nightmare for trekkers on a schedule.

There is a direct flight from Hamad International Airport in Doha (airport code DOH) to Kilimanjaro International Airport(JRO). This is not a bad idea for travellers from Asia, Middle East  and Europe  as the flight options from Doha are reasonably priced.

DOMESTIC FLIGHT TO KILIMANJARO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (JRO)

Precision Air – Travellers may flight from other parts in Tanzania including Dar es Salaam (DAR) and Mwanza to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO).

Air Kenya – based out of Wilson Airport (WIL) in Nairobi, Kenya, their flights to Kilimanjaro take approximately 1 hour.

Air Tanzania – Travellers may flight from other parts in Tanzania including Dar es Salaam (DAR) and Mwanza to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO

WHEN TO VISIT IN TANZANIA?

The long dry season lasts throughout JuneJulyAugustSeptember and October is when rainfall is unusual, even on the islands. Temperatures vary hugely with altitude and location, but it’s usually a fine, clear sky and sunny weather – it’s a great time to visit Tanzania. During November and Decemberthere’s another rainy season: the ‘short rains’. These are much lighter than the main rains and less reliable.

The best time to visit Tanzania is between January and February (known as the high season) when the weather is hot but not unpleasant, and dry. However, the best time to visit Serengeti National Park and go on game drives is between late June and October, when the animals are most visible.

BEST TIME FOR GREAT MIGRATION

The best season to visit Tanzania is during the long dry season, which falls from July to October. During this time, grasses are shorter which makes wildlife viewing easier. July to October also coincides with the Great Migration in the Serengeti.

From January to March, Tanzania experiences its short dry season and this is another spectacular time to visit. During this time, the wildebeest move south and its calving season in February with thousands of newborn beasts born every day attracting lots of big cats and other predators. Incredible safari at this time of year.

The rainiest months in Tanzania are April and May. However, much of the day can remain dry with short bursts of heavy downpours in the late afternoon and early morning. These rains can impact your safari activity, however many guides love this time of year as there are fewer other safari vehicles around and you’ll be treated to beautiful, dramatic skies.
